Web History

My first web page was born around December 1999.  It was a free web page hosted by MSN.  It had pop up ads associated with every page.  It was also limited to 12 Megabytes.  I used this for 2 years and shared many photos and web pages.  It was fun, I hope you enjoyed it.  But the 12 MB limit, the ads, the labor intensive maintenance turned me off.  I will not maintain those old, free pages anymore.  So in January 2002, I quit MSN the Internet Service Provider and signed up with a local isp.  I am now dialing up, unlimited access at 56K for 10 bucks a month and have 20 MB web space.. Yahoo.  Someday I will host and serve my own domain then we will see something.
Another major revision here.  2003 and I have deleted all the java junk from my pages.  That stuff was fun, but it took up space and forced me to delete half of my old pages.  So gone is the java but in its place all my old pages from 1999, 2000, and 2001.  I have also added pages of photos from 1997 and 1998, I am using a super small file size now and the resolution of the pictures is low.  But this strategy allows faster loading and I am able to have more pages.  Check em out, hope you enjoy them.
It's now April 2004.  I have been at the limit of my free 20 MB from Gotnet.net and they turned off my ftp access, I am unable to update or add to my web pages.  I have looked around and Lanset.net is a local isp that is offering 8.95 a month unlimited access with 60 MB of personal web space. Gotnet at the same time is up to 15 dollars a month now with the same old 20 MB limit.  I am considering going to pbase.com to open a 23 dollars per year 100 MB photo hosting site.  That is less than 2 dollars a month.  So if you do the math I could get a combined web storage of 160 MB plus unlimited dial up internet access for 11 dollars a month.  Probably enough for 160 pages of photos or 640 pictures at 250 kb per photo.  My new digital camera makes it real easy to create web pages with much higher quality photos.  No more scanning, yea!  I briefly considered Directnic.com because they offer 15 dollar domain name and 20 MB of free web space for a year.  And for 15 dollars more, ad free web space for a year.  Nice deal but I still would need dial up or dsl or cable on top of that.
I am trying to unify and make more consistent my page styles.  I am settling on a page of thumbnails and text, edited with Netscape composer version 4.72.  I have no animated gifs, java or flash.  So blah blah blah it just goes on and on doesn't it, ha ha.  Just go back to the photo pages and enjoy.
Here we are in August 2004, the new isp seems to work ok.  I found some old pages that I deleted a long time ago.  I just restored them.  They are from 1999 and 2000, kitten's page and mom's page.  Added links to other people's online photos, see the links at the top. My web site now consists of 32.5 megabytes, 1,123 files, 65 folders and over 50 pages.
Here we are in September 2004, I have started the Family Tree Project and added a web page for that.
Added a Photo Fun Page for a couple of gag photos that I created.  Check it out.
Added a page of fish photos.  Those fast movers are near impossible to photograph, but I get a few ok photos to share.
June 2005 and the weather is cool and rainy?  Wow time to work on the old web page.  I have added some photos from September through December 2004.  Also I am putting in January through June 2005 pages of photos.  Been to Yosemite 3 times this year and will go again on June 18. Check out the new photos.  It is now easier to process digital pictures with a batch resizer and automatic rename functions for thumbnails.  The only difficulty now is the culling process to decide what to include and what to leave out for brevity sake.  Each session with the camera can generate 50, 100 or more photos.  I am also now considering 15 dollars per month dsl with a dynamic ip, that means faster uploads and downloads which could mean larger format images and/or more images per page.  Most people now have broadband and speed is not an issue for many of us.  My web site is now 54+MB and 1500+ files, I will be making a change when the I reach the 60MB limit of my isp.  Stay tuned for more.
Welcome to the old web page hosted on the new host, Directnic.com.  July 2005.
I have been active lately with the web pages because of the new dsl isp and new host.  I am up to 75 MB of data hosted and 700 KB/s down and 384 KB/s up.  We all share the connection and have left dial-up forever.
Just added photos pages of pumpkins and another trip to Great America. This is just under 3MB of data.
November, 2005 and I present some fish photos and photos from Tioga Road and Yosemite Valley, enjoy.  Added many links to live cams around the western US.  The quality of these images has gotten better recently.  I am still researching home web server options.
December, 2005: added December photos and removed inactive live cam links.
Two thousand six, '06, just added Christmas eve and Christmas day pages of photos.  My digital camera says I have taken over 5000 photos.  At this rate I will surely hit my 6000th digital image in '06, probably in the summer.  2005 was a good year for my web site, it is now a portly 90+MB.
Added Whitney and Family Photos pages in the 1995 section and some new pages for 2006.  Photos from Winchester Mystery house, Globetrotters, Shima Tract, and January 11 family celebrations.  And deleted some inactive webcam links.  Added one new live cam link for a West facing cam, West of Yosemite Valley.  Google searches for vividlee results in my web page as the number one return, cool, finally.
Removed Louis' link, added Gary's, added the 2007 pages up to the baby fest on March.  Added Tioga live camera image link.  New thumbnails are color and the large images are now 1200x800 pixels.  This means more work for me because I have to crop each image before resizing.  On the plus side they look better and are good for printing.  On the minus side the file sizes are slightly larger and the top of people's heads sometimes get sacrificed.
The end of 2007 has come and gone.  I have just added the last pages of 2007 that show a few photos of Taylor's performance in the Nutcracker and Charise's graduation.  Also a page of Christmas photos for 2007 has been added. Reformatted tables and text formatting.
Hi, I just added some new content here in mid May.  There are now links in the 2008 area.  Take a look.  I have not taken as many photos as in the past and have been very slow to post to the web.  I have yaken 212 photos as of mid May.  Here are a few of them for you.
Here is an update for 2009.  YouTube was fun until they deleted my video and muted others because of the music track that I added.  DirectNic will only allow .swf files, these are shockwave flash files.  I finally found a free flash publisher and tried it out.  It seems to work and I am able to embed them in new pages and this page.  The only downside is the slower load time and the requirement that active x controls need to be on.  I like it.  The other thing is MS Slide Show PowerToy for XP, I can easily take the same photos and put them in a slide show.  So I will use those two methods primarily and see how it goes.  Now I just need to get out there with my camera and take a lot more photos than I have been.
Canon S50 digital camera failing after five years and over 10,000 exposures.  Looking for a replacement, should be fun and I am looking forward to it very much.  This web site is now over 400 MB.  Looks like 2007 was where the growth really started.  This coincides with my use of MS Powertoy Slide Show.  Also the Flash slide shows I make now are a couple of megabytes each.  I really hope people have fast Internet connections.
Spring 2010, Flash removed and added back with 2009 Flash Slide Show.

Robert Frost
Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it's queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there's some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Louis Armstrong
What a Wonderful World
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They're really saying I love you.

I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world

About the background image:
This is a photo I took on a hike with Stuart on March 3, 2005. We hiked up most of the way to the top of Yosemite Falls in the late afternoon.  As we hiked down the sun was setting.  We reached the trailhead and the car just as the sun went down and darkness fell.  One the way down I snapped a few photos including this one.  I like this one because Half Down is covered in snow, lit up by the setting sun, veiled in a low clouds behind and in front.  The trees along the steep trail framed the scene nicely.  Then at home I used Adobe Photoshop Business Edition to change the photo to black and white, feather the outside edges to a neutral color, increased the brightness, decreased the contrast and then added back some yellow color.  The look I was going for is a bit like old Chinese landscape paintings.  I kinda like the effect.
